Does your child cry easily? Do they struggle with the word NO? Do you feel like their tantrums are dominating your daily life?

Tantrums and meltdowns are common behaviours that present in toddlers, typically between the ages of 1 and 3 years. They are considered to be a normal part of development, and the result of the numerous developmental events occurring in this age group. Triggers like frustration, tiredness, hunger, overstimulation, stubbornness and jealousy are all the result of rapidly changing language, motor, social, emotional and intellectual phases of development.

Some young children display more tantrums than others, depending on their temperament. Personality factors can also govern how loud and long their tantrum can continue for. Parenthood does not come with a manual, and it can be hard to challenge your child when they become so distressed- sometimes it is easier to just give in. But the toddler phase is the perfect time to show your child NO means NO- that frustration should not lead to screaming, crying, throwing things and hitting out. It is a time to show your little human the way that life works. After all- what kind of behaviour do you want them to show when things don’t go well when they are an adult?

Cognitive behaviour therapy is a practical treatment, where programs are written for parents on an individuated basis- showing them how and when to manage their child’s tantrums and meltdowns. This can be sorted in as few as 3 or 4 meetings.
